According to most reliable online sources, Seiko DAINI's 5100 movement range made its debut in 1967 with the introduction of the 5106 Seikomatic-P. The 5146 Hi-Beat (28,800 BHP) movement Presmatic was introduced in 1969.

The Seiko Presmatic 5146 movement is truly unique, and it was way ahead of its time. It is a high precision timepiece equipped with a ball raced auto-weight and hacking features. It also has an "instant" day / date change, thus both day and date will change simultaneously at the stroke of midnight which is highly impressive.

The 5146 was the last 51XX to go out of service in 1971; hence it became a Collectible almost immediately.

For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, this is a July 1970 Seiko 5146-7040 Presmatic Hi-Beat 27J DAINI in near mint condition!

Designed for the sporty business executive in mind, this classy 5146-7040 27 Jewel Automatic has an immaculately preserved reflective Silver Sunburst Dial that creates a two-tone effect from certain angles which is extremely pleasing to the eye. Its black + silver bar indices and hands, and silver day/date window are also in pristine condition after a good clean-up.

The case and crystal were given a proper clean-up and rub-down to remove almost all main scratches and is now extremely pleasing to the eye albeit hairline scratches that are barely noticeable. 

The crown is original and located at its traditional 3H position and is easily accessible. The quick day and date set works as it should and operates in the traditional Presmatic method of adjusting the date and hands. 

The movement was carefully stripped, meticulously cleaned, oiled, re-assembled and calibrated on 12 September 2023; hence, it underwent an overhaul and not a general servicing. It should be able to operate unhindered until the next servicing thereby providing the owner peace of mind.

Equipped with the famous 5146 movement, it operates at 28,800 BPH and has 27 Jewels. The time-grapher shows excellent readings of -1 second and amplitude of 157 in a relatively straight and centered line! Such readings are exceptional even by brand new modern automatic watch standards whose accepted tolerance is -20 to +40 seconds a day! This is a testament to the quality, the meticulous care provided over the years, and of course the painstaking calibration conducted.

The case width and height are approximately 36mm (without crown) and 40mm respectively. The lug width is 18mm and the strap can accommodate wrists up to 21cm; hence this watch is suitable for men and the modern women.

The bracelet is a Seiko Presmatic Signed SS bracelet that was also subjected to ultrasonic cleaning and a high-quality polish. The links were also tightened. The result - an almost mint condition bracelet.

To the best of our knowledge and expertise when overhauling the timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket parts or modified.

Due to its age, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested.

The pictures provided show the watch in immaculate condition (no dents and major scratches), and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained. It has also been demagnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear + tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original case, so a simple aftermarket box / pouch will be provided.

Seldom can one find a vintage watch that offers this and more. Yes, there are many other same / similar models in the market, but none are as well-kept and maintained as what you see here, and with an attractive price to boot. Hence, it is a no-brainer that this one-of-a-kind watch will make an extremely beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in July 1970.

Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.

Valued between S$ 370.00 to 650.00 on various auction / online sites from really horrible, to un-serviced, to "as is," to serviced, to refurbished models. Online prices for fully restored and New Old Stock (NOS) models are unavailable at the time of writing. This overhauled, calibrated and polished timepiece with original bracelet is being sold at the reasonable price of S$ 399.00 for the next owner to appreciate.

Do also bear in mind that it will cost between S$ 180.00 to S$ 200.00 for a proper overhaul, an estimated S$ 80.00 to calibrate (depending on watch condition), and S$ 100.00 to polish including tightening of bracelet links - these costs do not apply when purchasing this timepiece. So, if anyone was to sell such a timepiece at a low price yet claim that it has been serviced, one has to ask what kind of servicing was conducted, if any.
