Ben Nevis, a coastal distillery in the western Highlands, Fort WIlliam, Scotland is located at the base of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles.
Built by "Long" John MacDonald in 1825, it was so popular by the end of the 19th century that at one point the estate employed more than 200 staff. After a series of closures and re-openings at the beginning of the 20th, it was eventually purchased by former Canadian bootlegger, Joseph Hobbs.
He began using "continuous distillation by installing a coffey still in 1955, making Ben Nevis Scotland's first dual-operation distillery that could blend its malt and grain simultaneously before filling it to cask.
Sporadic closures again plagued the distillery after Hobb's death, and stability finally ensured in 1989 when it was acquired by long-term admirer and customer, Nikka Whisky of Japan.
Its turbulent history means there were few distillery bottlings until the launch of the 10 year old single malt in 1996. Hence this 1992 distilled expression was cleverly swooped up and bottled in 2005 by La Maison du Whisky (LMDW) in Paris to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
This 13yo expression is non-chilled-filtered and bottled at 46.0% alcohol content which is unheard of for a Ben Nevis at that time, thus making it an authentic harbinger that allowed more non-chilled filtered and cask strength expressions to cometh forth from her stills due to the success of this expression worldwide.
Single Malt Ben Nevis 1992 Whiskey Single Sherry Cask #2614 / LMDW 50th Anniversary Liquor Whisky
Only 700 bottles of this expression was produced hence its rarity is truly an understatement. It's quality was too good to miss so I drank one bottle myself, and it was life changing!
The empty bottle and its casing is also for sale at S$ 49.00.
This is a non-existent Limited Edition Expression bottled almost 20 years ago, hence, a certain amount of the liquid may have given itself up as the "Angels Share," and the cork for such old expressions has the propensity to break which is very normal due to this phenomenon. Thus, the drinker must practice due diligence when opening this liquid gold bottle.
But it seems that the Angels really had a good dram amongst themselves because the "Angels Share" for this bottle expression (worldwide) is quite a fair bit, and the selling price of this bottle has been adjusted accordingly.
Take note that these expressions are sold in "as is" condition due to their age.
