According to most reliable online sources, the Seiko 5126 (23J) and 5139 (27J) movements made their debuts in 1967 under the Daini factory. So, it is safe to assume that the 5139 equipped with more jewels were used for the higher end models being produced by Seiko Daini. It is also fair to assume that this February 1968 may be one of the first watches produced by the Daini factory with the 5139 movement.
"DX" means "Deluxe" in short, further indicating that this model was for the upper market. Moreover, this is one of the very few models that was produced with a gold-filled status thereby making this watch exceptional!
THIS IS A HIGHLY SORT AFTER COLLECTORS WATCH because of the 4 main following reasons:
a) It houses a 5139 instead of a 5126 movement;
b) It has an "AD" (Applied Dial) status thereby its "Seiko", "5" logo, hands, and indices are 14K solid gold; and the case and bracelet are gold-filled which is more expensive to produce;
c) The gold-filled Bracelet even has the movement model number printed on it which is extremely rare to find on vintage watches!;
d) Dial and Case Back model numbers TALLY (5139-7020) which is more rare than sighting a unicorn!
For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, THIS IS A PRE-DAINI (logo) Seiko Seikosha in near MINT condition.
This handsome 5139 27 Jewel Automatic has an immaculately preserved reflective Silvery-White Sunburst Dial that had undergone a deep cleaning to reveal a stunning sunburst effect dial that is extremely pleasing to the eye. The 14K solid gold 3D baton indices, hands, logo, gold-filled chapter ring and case also underwent a good cleaning. The Date / Day window has some patina growing on it and has been left alone whilst cleaning.
The case and lugs are one piece, hence there will not be any form of welding defect / crack that is extremely important for vintage watches.
The timeless cylindrical shaped gold-filled case was buffed as best as possible; however, there are some hairline scratches present. There is a slight peel-off at the 7H bezel location, and there are minor signs of wearing off at the gold filled butterfly buckle. Do take note. The acrylic glass was replaced and is in excellent condition.
The crown is located at the traditional 4H position and is nicely tucked away to prevent damage or snags yet it is easily accessible. The date quickset works flawlessly by pushing the crown in. The time is adjusted by pulling the crown out. The day quickset is via turning the hands backwards and forwards past midnight.
The movement was carefully stripped and meticulously cleaned, oiled and re-assembled in August 2022. It should be able to operate unhindered for the next 5 to 10 years at the least thereby providing the owner peace of mind.
Equipped with the well revered 5139 movement, it has an impressive 27 Jewels that operate at 18,000 beats per hour (BPH) giving it excellent longevity and accuracy.
The case width and height are approximately 35.8mm (without crown) and 40.5mm respectively. The lug width is 18mm and the bracelet can accommodate wrists up to 21cm; hence, the watch size is suitable for men and the modern women.
To the best of our knowledge and expertise when overhauling the timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket parts or modified thereby it is considered in near MINT condition.
Due to its age, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested.
The pictures provided show the watch’s case in pristine condition (no dents and major scratches), and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained. It has also been demagnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear & tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. An aftermarket box or purposeful carrying case will be provided instead.
Seldom can one find a vintage watch that offers this and more. Yes, there are many other same / similar models in the market, BUT none are as well-kept and maintained as what you see here, and with an attractive price to boot. So, it is a no-brainer that this one-of-a-kind watch will make an extremely beautiful birthday present for that dear someone born in February 1968! Another no-brainer is the fact that the value of this watch will appreciate over time.
Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life, and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.
This is a truly magnificent February 1968 Gold-Filled Seiko Seikosha DAINI in immaculate condition with a beautifully preserved vintage dial, immaculate indices, hands, movement and case; so, be unique and use something that is almost impossible to source.
This is a must-have for the Seiko die-hard fan, or any vintage watch fan for that matter!
