Seiko shocked the world when they introduced the world's first quartz watch in December 1969 with an accuracy level of 5 seconds A MONTH which was 100 times more accurate than any other watch in the world; thus began the watch second revolution that would see many small to medium sized watch making companies close for business.
So, it is safe to say that Seiko is THE leader in the field of quartz watch technology but they had to finely tune their business strategy to avoid self-destruction to their automatic watch business whilst introducing the quartz watch range to the market.
For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, this watch was strictly meant for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and only a small batch was ever produced; hence, this is a Collectible.
The Seiko Diver 6548-6000 Quartz was introduced in July 1982 to cater to the "yuppie" crowd who wanted a rugged divers' watch yet without the hassle of adjusting the date and time should the watch stop when not in use. And by now, quartz watches became a trend to own.
This seldom seen July 1982 Vintage Seiko has a beautiful and immaculately preserved stunning dial so too the date / day window after a good clean-up. The lumen Hands and Indices do work and are in superb condition.
The case and case back were buffed as best as possible but scratches are noticeable. The mineral glass is original and in good condition albeit a few scratches. The bezel was removed and given a good cleaning and works as it should.
The crown is located at the traditional 4H position and is nicely tucked away to prevent damage or snags. The date / day quickset works by pulling out the crown to the first level and the second level for the hands adjustment.
Because it is a JDM, the Day is in Kanji and English, cool!
The movement was carefully stripped and meticulously cleaned on February 2023. The battery had been replaced hence it should be able to operate until the next battery change thereby providing the owner peace of mind.
Equipped with the 6458 movement, it has the impressive Hacking feature (the second hand stops when the crown is fully loosen and pulled out thus allowing for synchronization.
The case width and height are approx. 38mm (w/o crown) and 42mm respectively. The lug width is 19mm and the strap can accommodate wrists up to 21cm; hence, the watch size is suitable for men and the modern women.
The watch comes with a brand new Aviation Bund black NATO nylon strap with calf leather padding.
To the best of our knowledge while servicing this timepiece, everything excluding the bracelet are 100% original Seiko. No parts were replaced with aftermarket or modified parts.
Due to its age, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested.
The pictures provided shows the watch in excellent condition (no dents and major scratches), and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. A nice purposeful carrying case or box will be provided instead.
This rare timepiece will make a beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in July 1982, and its value will appreciate over time.
Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life, and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.
Do also bear in mind that it will cost between S$ 180.00 to S$ 200.00 for a good servicing including battery change, an estimated S$ 80.00 to calibrate (depending on watch condition), and S$ 100.00 to polish including tightening of bracelet links - these costs do not apply when purchasing this timepiece. So, if anyone was to sell such a timepiece at a low price yet claim that it has been serviced, one has to ask what kind of servicing was conducted, if any.
This is a truly magnificent July 1982 Seiko Diver 6458-6000 Quartz JDM in excellent condition with a beautifully preserved and stunning dial, immaculate indices, hands, movement and case; so, be unique and wear a watch that is almost impossible to source in such fine condition.
