According to the majority of reliable on-line sources, Seiko introduced the 7009 movement in 1976 that became the workhorse for most Seiko mid-range models produced by DAINI until it was replaced by the 7S26 movement which debuted in 1996.

For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, this is a Seiko 5 May 1979 DAINI in very good condition.

Deep cleaning on the dial, hands, and date window reveal minimal wearing and corrosion, thus revealing the said components in excellent condition. However, the lumens from the markers and hands have turned brownish which has made the dial rather attractive. And surprisingly the Dial and Hand lumens are working even though rather faintly.

Its unique squarish case comes with sexy corners on the mid-level, thus giving the case a unique multiple faceted designed case. The case has been buffed as best as possible. Some miniscule hairline scratches are present but almost unnoticeable unless one is looking for them. A ding on the left side of the case is present though and I decided not to polish it off because it will surely affect the shape of the watch case.

The crown is located at the traditional 4H position and is neatly tucked away to prevent damage and snags and is easily accessible. The date and time quickset works flawlessly by pulling out the crown to the first and second level to adjust the date (via counter-clockwise) and time respectively. The day quickset is via pushing the crown in.

The movement was carefully stripped, cleaned, oiled, re-assembled and calibrated in June 2022. It should be able to operate without hinderance for the next 5 to 10 years thereby providing the owner peace of mind.

Equipped with the 7009 movement, it has 17 Jewels that operate at 21,600 beats per hour (BPH) giving it excellent accuracy. The time-grapher shows excellent readings i.e. rate of +1 second every 24 hours and amplitude of 254 in a relatively straight and centered line! Such readings are exceptional even by brand new modern automatic watch standards whereby the accepted tolerance is -20 to +40 seconds a day! This is a testament to the quality, excellent power reserve and longevity for such a vintage timepiece, the meticulous care provided over the years, and of course the basic calibration conducted.

The case width and height are approximately 37.0mm (without crown) and 41mm respectively. The lug width is an impressive 20mm, and the strap can accommodate wrists up to 21cm; hence, this watch is suitable for men and the modern women.

A sexy vintage style saddle brown genuine leather strap with matching stitching, square ends, black buckle and quick release spring bars, is selected to compliment the black dial and brownish indices. 

To the best of our knowledge and expertise when overhauling the timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket parts or modified thereby it is considered in near MINT condition.

Due to its age, please note that this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested.

The pictures provided show the watch’s case in excellent condition (no dents and major scratches), and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained This beautiful watch has been de-magnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear & tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. A nice purposeful carrying case or box will be provided instead.

Seldom can one find a May 1979 Seiko 5 DAINI 7009-8079 in excellent condition and more. Yes, there are many other same / similar models in the market, BUT none are as well-kept and maintained as what you see here, and with an attractive price to boot. So, it is a no-brainer that this one-of-a-kind watch will make an extremely beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in May 1979! Another no-brainer is the fact that the value of this watch will appreciate over time.

Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life, and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.

Do also bear in mind that it will cost between S$ 80.00 to S$ 100.00 for a general servicing, an estimated S$ 80.00 to calibrate (depending on watch condition), and S$ 100.00 to polish including tightening of bracelet links - these costs do not apply when purchasing this timepiece. So, if anyone was to sell such a timepiece at a low price yet claim that it has been serviced, one has to ask what kind of servicing was conducted, if any.

A truly impressive horology vintage piece I must sincerely admit; so, be unique and own something that is difficult to source and beautifully maintained.
