According to most reliable online sources, Seiko introduced the "Liner" 620/3140 21J manual winding timepiece in 1960 but it had used various movement iterations. The Liner was quickly followed by the Seiko Skyliner utilising the 402/6220 in 1961. This was quickly followed by the Skyliner Calendar 956/6222 apparently within the same year; Hence, the 3140 Liner was only produced for a short period before being succeeded by 956/6220.
The 3140 movement will bring forth the famous Seiko Lord Marvel in 1968 and is a JDM model; hence, Collectible status assured.
For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, this is an extremely rare January 1962 Seiko Liner 3140 SD Dial because it houses a 23J 3140 instead of a 21J!
The Case-Back has a seahorse to indicate its 30m waterproof which was considered top quality at that time.
It's original silvery sunburst dial, 3D baton indices, and dauphine hands are in excellent condition after a good clean-up; however, there is a slight build-up of Patina at the edges of the dial and at the 3H position. The crystal was replaced and given a good buff.
The crown is original and is located at its traditional 3H position. The time quickset works flawlessly by pulling out the crown for adjustment.
The 3140 movement was carefully stripped and meticulously cleaned via ultrasonic immersion, oiled, re-assembled and calibrated on 22 June 2024. In short, it underwent an overhaul and not a basic service and should be able to operate unhindered until the next servicing thereby providing the owner peace of mind.
Equipped with the 3140 movement, it operates at 18,000 BHP and has 23 jewels. The time-grapher, after hours of calibration, shows superb readings of 0 seconds every 24 hours and amplitude of 288 with a super straight centered line! Such readings are truly exceptional even by brand new modern automatic watch standards whereby the accepted tolerance is -20 to +40 seconds a day! This is a testament to the quality, the meticulous care provided over the years, and the painstaking calibration conducted.
The case width (w/o crown) and height are approx. 36.5m and 44mm respectively. The lug width is 18mm and the strap can accommodate wrists up to 21cm; hence, suitable for men and the modern women.
To the best of our knowledge and expertise when overhauling the timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket or modified parts.
Due to its age, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested even though the seals and gaskets are in place.
The pictures provided shows the watch in excellent condition (no dents and major scratches), and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained. It has also been demagnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear + tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. A purposeful carrying case or box will be provided instead.
Seldom can one find a Seiko Liner 23J vintage watch that offers this and more. Yes, there are many other same / similar models in the market, BUT none are as well kept, maintained and calibrated as what you see here, and with an attractive price to boot. Hence, this watch will make a beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in January 1962, and its value will appreciate over time.
This is an extremely rare 23J Seiko Liner Cal 3140 in stunning condition; so, be unique and wear a watch that is almost impossible to source in such fine condition.
