According to most reliable online sources, this Seiko 5717-8990 Mechanical Chronograph and the 6217 World Time were produced during the Tokyo, Japan Olympics held in October 1964 - a marketing ploy to allow Seiko to gain worldwide attention because Seiko was chosen as the Tokyo Olympics Official Timekeeper. The marketing stunt worked magnificently!
This is the only Seiko watch that uses the 5717 movement.
This is Seiko's first ever Chronograph, and it is a mechanical. This vintage has an "AD"(Applied Dial); hence, the markers shine brilliantly when it catches the light.
This very rare December 1964 Vintage Seiko has a beautiful and immaculately preserved metallic sunburst dial that was given a good clean-up. The 3D-styled silver baton indices and dauphine hands are in near-mint condition after undergoing a good clean-up as well.
Its silver case was buffed as best as possible albeit minor scratches that are barely noticeable. The bi-directional Bakelite original bezel rotates smoothly. The crystal was also polished and is in excellent condition albeit miniscule scratches do remain.
The crowns are located at the traditional 2H and 3H position and are nicely tucked away to prevent damage or snags, yet easily accessible.
The movement was given a good servicing on 19 July 2026; so, it should be able to operate unhindered until the next servicing thereby providing the owner peace of mind.
Equipped with the 5717 movement, it has 21 Jewels and operate at 18,000 BPH. The timing shows approximately 17 seconds deviation daily while lying flat which is well within the 30 second requirements for by brand new modern automatic watch standards.
To the best of our knowledge and expertise when overhauling the timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket or modified parts.
Due to its age, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested even though the seals and gaskets are present / intact.
The case width and height are approximately 37.2mm (w/o crown) and 44.3mm respectively. The lug width is 18mm and the bracelet can accommodate wrists up to 16.5cm; thus, suitable for men and the modern women.
A vintage Super Engineer bracelet comes with this timepiece. It too was given a deep cleaning and buffing because Seiko began producing their own bracelets circa1968. FYI.
The pictures provided shows the watch in stunning condition, and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained. It has also been demagnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear + tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. An aftermarket box or purposeful carrying case will be provided instead.
This extremely rare Seiko Chronograph Mechanical watch will make a beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in December 1964, and its value will appreciate over time.
This is an extremely rare Sunburst Dial December 1964 Seiko SUWA Mechanical Chronograph 5717-8990 AD Timepiece; so, be unique and own a December 1964 Birthday Watch that is almost impossible to source in such stunning condition or purchase it for that special someone instead.
