According to the most legitimate sources found online, the Seiko 6220 is a 21J mechanical hand winding movement that was introduced in 1964 specifically as part of Seiko's transition to its new four-digit calibre and case-reference numbering system.
So, in practical historical terms: the Seikosha 402 became the Seiko 6220 whilst the Seikosha 956 became the Seiko 6222 with date
The 6220 and 402 are therefore essentially members of the same mechanical lineage rather than completely unrelated movements.
Do note that the Skyliner did move to the edgier 61A and 6102 movements in the late 60s.
For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, this is a December 1965 Seiko 6220-7020 Skyliner with lattice bezel in stunning condition and is a highly sort-after Collectible for a variety of reasons, some already mentioned.
It's original silvery-grey dial, 3D baton indices, syringe hands case are in superb condition after a good clean-up. The case and crystal were given a good buff to remove age marks and stains and is now in stunning condition albeit a few minor scratches that are barely noticeable because of the linen dial.
The crown is original and is located at its traditional 3H position.
The movement was carefully cleaned, and a basic servicing was conducted on the 14 July 2026; hence, it should be able to operate unhindered until the next servicing thereby providing the owner a peace of mind.
Equipped with the underappreciated 6220 movement, it operates at 18,000 BHP and has 21 jewels. The timing shows approximately 15 seconds deviation daily which is well within the 30 second requirements for by brand new modern automatic watch standards.
The case width (without crown) and height are approximately 33.6mm and 36mm respectively. This lug width is 18mm and the strap can accommodate wrists up to 20cm; hence, this watch is suitable for men and the modern women.
To the best of our knowledge while overhauling this timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket parts or modified.
Due to its age, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested.
The pictures provided show the watch in immaculate condition (no dents and major scratches), and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained. It has also been demagnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear & tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. A nice purposeful carrying case or box will be provided instead.
Seldom can one find a vintage watch that offers this and more. Yes, there are many other same / similar models in the market, but none are as well kept, maintained and calibrated as what you see here, and with an attractive price to boot. Hence, it is a no-brainer that this one-of-a-kind watch will make an extremely beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in December 1965.
Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.
This is a highly sort-after and rare Seiko Skyliner 6220-7020 in superb condition, so, be unique and own a December 1965 Birthday Watch that is almost impossible to source in such fine condition or purchase it for that special someone.
