Introduced in December 1969, the Seiko Quartz Astron is often credited as the world's first commercially available quartz wristwatch. Quartz watches use a quartz crystal oscillator to keep time that is much more accurate than traditional mechanical movements used in wristwatches at the time.

The quartz movement in the Astron was incredibly precise, with an accuracy of within 5 seconds per month, far superior to mechanical watches of the era.

The introduction of the Seiko Quartz Astron had a profound impact on the watch industry. It marked the beginning of the Quartz Revolution that led to the decline of traditional mechanical watches in the market and the rise of more accurate and later, more affordable quartz timepieces.

Seiko's Quartz Astron was showcased at the Baselworld watch fair in Switzerland in 1970, where it received international attention and acclaim because this watch changed horology history forever.

For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, this is a Seiko Lord Quartz 7853-7020 JDM which is one of the most sort after model; and its beautifully cleaned gunmetal grey linen dial with 3D Baton Indices and Baton hands adds class.

The Seiko Lord Quartz 7853-7020 is one of the more interesting and underrated Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) quartz watches from the late 1970s. It belongs to Seiko's Lord Quartz (LQ) line, which was positioned just below the King Quartz range and above many standard Seiko quartz models. When introduced in 1978, some Lord Quartz models were actually priced higher than certain King Quartz references, reflecting Seiko's confidence in the new 7853 movement and modern styling. The Calibre 7853 was one of Seiko's higher-grade quartz movements of the era and is known for excellent reliability and longevity. Many examples continue to run accurately nearly 50 years later.

The styling is distinctly "Seiko Quartz Golden Age" and shares design language with contemporary King Quartz and Grand Quartz models. Collectors often appreciate these watches because they offer high-end 1970s Seiko finishing without the much higher prices commanded by Grand Quartz models.

This timepiece was given a good servicing, and its dial was meticulously cleaned, its quartz movement cleaned, and its battery replaced on 12 June 2026. It should be able to operate unhindered until the next battery replacement thereby providing the owner peace of mind.

The crown is left uncorked to prevent battery drainage.

This typical cylindrical shaped silver case was cleaned and polished. Most imperfections were removed without compromising the case shape. The crystal was polished and is now in near mint condition albeit miniscule scratches do remain.

The crown is located at its traditional 3H position and is easily accessible. Since it is a JDM model, its day is in English and Kanji. Cool!

The case width and height are approximately 33.7mm (without crown) and 38.9mm respectively. The lug to lug is 18mm and the bracelet can accommodate wrists up to 16.3cm; hence, this watch is suitable for men and the modern women.

A hi-quality Maruman Vintage Super Engineer SS Bracelet is included as part of the deal. It too underwent a deep cleaning and polish and is now in superb condition albeit tiny scratches do remain.

To the best of our knowledge, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket parts.

Even though the case seal was replaced and crown gasket is present, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested due to its age.

The pictures provided show the watch in excellent condition and well maintained. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. A nice purposeful carrying case or box will be provided instead.

Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.

Yes, there are many other same models in the market, but almost all are not in the same quality condition and as well maintained as what you see here. Hence, it is a no-brainer that this one-of-a-kind timepiece will make an extremely beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in April 1978!

This is a highly sort-after Collectible Seiko Type II Quartz 7853-7020 JDM in stunning condition; so, be unique and own an April 1978 Birthday Watch that is nearly impossible to source in such fine condition or purchase it for that special someone.
