According to most reliable online information, the 5M42 Kinetic movement was introduced in the early 1990s.

The 5M42 was one of Seiko's early Kinetic movements, which combined the convenience of quartz accuracy with the self-charging capability of an automatic watch, using the motion of the wearer's wrist to generate electrical energy. The 5M42 features a power reserve indicator and a rechargeable battery (capacitor) that stored energy generated by the kinetic rotor.

The 5M42 was part of Seiko's broader Kinetic line that underwent several updates and improvements over the years. As technology advanced, Seiko improved its Kinetic movements and introduced newer Kinetic movements with enhanced performance, such as the 5M43 and later models like the 5M62 and 5M63 leading to the phase-out of older models like the 5M42. Again, according to most reliable online sites, Seiko ceased production of the 5M42 Kinetic movement circa 2002-2003 in favor of more efficient and reliable versions.

Here we have a super rare June 1998 Seiko Kinetic 5M42-0G99 that has become a highly Collectible timepiece especially the blue dial model which we see here.

This timepiece was given a good servicing, and its dial was meticulously cleaned, its electronic movement cleaned and touched up, demagnetised, and its battery capacitor replaced on 28 August 2024. It should be able to operate unhindered until the next battery capacitor change thereby providing the owner peace of mind.

This case was also given a good rub while maintaining its sharp lines and sexy curves. Most imperfections were removed without compromising the case shape. There are miniscule scratches on the bezel and case-back with is synonymous with age. The bezel rotates as it should. The crystal is original and was given a good rub as well and is also in near mint condition.

The crown is located at the traditional 3H position and is sandwiched between 2 crown guards yet easily accessible. The date and time quickset works by uncorking the crown to the first and second level for respective quickset adjustments.

The case width and height are approx. 37.6mm (w/o crown) and 46.6mm respectively. The lug width is 19mm and the bracelet can accommodate wrists up to 18cm; hence, it is suitable for both man and the modern woman.

To the best of our knowledge and expertise when overhauling the timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket or modified parts.

Even though its seals and gaskets are in place, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested due to its age.

The pictures provided shows the watch in excellent condition and well maintained. It has also been demagnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear & tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original box. A nice purposeful carrying case or box will be provided instead.

Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life, and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.
