According to most reliable online sources, Seiko DAINI's 51XX movement range made its debut in 1967 with the introduction of the 5106 Seikomatic-P. The 5146 Hi-Beat (28,800 BHP) movement Presmatic was introduced in 1969.
The Seiko Presmatic 5146 movement is truly unique, and it was way ahead of its time. It is a high precision timepiece equipped with a ball raced auto-weight and hacking features. It also has an "instant" day / date change, thus both day and date will change simultaneously at the stroke of midnight which is highly impressive. It is also a "hi-beat" movement thus it operates at 28,800bph with superb accuracy.
The 5146 was the last 51XX to go out of service in 1971; hence it became a Collectible almost immediately.
For Seiko Collectors and Vintage fans, this is a November 1969 Seiko 5146-5001 TV Presmatic Hi-Beat 27J DAINI in stunning condition!
Designed for the sporty business executive in mind, this classy 5146-5001 27 Jewel Automatic has an immaculately preserved reflective Silver Sunburst Dial which is extremely pleasing to the eye. Its baton indices and hands, and silver day/date window are also in pristine condition after a good clean-up.
The case and crystal were given a proper clean-up and rub-down to remove almost all main scratches, and is now extremely pleasing to the eye albeit miniscule hairline scratches that are barely unnoticeable.
The crown is original and located at its traditional 3H position and is easily accessible. The quick date set works flawlessly and operates in the traditional Presmatic method of adjusting the date and hands. There is no day quickset.
The movement was carefully stripped, meticulously cleaned, oiled, re-assembled and calibrated on 27 November 2023; hence, it underwent an overhaul and not a general servicing. It should be able to operate unhindered until the next servicing thereby providing the owner peace of mind.
Equipped with the famous 5146 movement, it has 27 Jewels giving it an extremely high level of accuracy. The time-grapher, after 60 hours of calibration, shows excellent readings i.e. rate of 0 seconds every 24 hours and amplitude of 156 in a relatively straight and centered line! Such readings are truly exceptional even by brand new modern automatic watch standards whose accepted tolerance is -20 to +40 seconds a day! This is a testament to the quality, excellent power reserve and longevity for such a vintage timepiece, the meticulous care provided over the years, and of course the painstaking calibration conducted.
The case width and height are approximately 38mm (without crown) and 42mm respectively. The lug width is 19mm and the bracelet can accommodate wrists up to 20cm; hence this watch is suitable for men and the modern women.
The bracelet is a Seiko Presmatic Signed SS bracelet that was also subjected to ultrasonic cleaning and a good buff. The links were also tightened.
To the best of our knowledge and expertise when overhauling the timepiece, the watch is 100% original Seiko components from this particular watch. No parts were replaced with aftermarket parts or modified thereby it is considered in near MINT condition.
Due to its age, this timepiece has not been water-resistant tested.
The pictures provided shows the watch case in excellent condition (no dents and major scratches), and the movement within squeaky clean and well maintained. It has also been demagnetised to improve parts reliability, minimise wear & tear, and improve accuracy. The only drawback is the lack of documentation and original case, so a simple aftermarket box / pouch will be provided.
Seldom can one find a vintage watch that offers this and more. Yes, there are many other same / similar models in the market, BUT none are as well kept and maintained as what you see here, and with an attractive price to boot. Hence, it is a no-brainer that this one-of-a-kind watch will make an extremely beautiful birthday present for that special someone born in November 1969. Another no-brainer is the fact that the value of this watch will appreciate over time.
Bear in mind that this watch has seen many of the previous owners’ ups and downs in life, and should be cherished and well taken care of for the next generation to savour such engineering beauty.
Do also bear in mind that it will cost between S$ 180.00 to S$ 200.00 for a proper overhaul, an estimated S$ 80.00 to calibrate (depending on watch condition), and S$ 100.00 to clean and polish including tightening of bracelet links - these costs do not apply when purchasing this timepiece. So, if anyone was to sell such a timepiece at a low price yet claim that it has been serviced, one has to ask what kind of servicing was conducted, if any.
This is a highly sort-after November 1969 Seiko Presmatic 5146-5001 with original bracelet; so, be unique and use something that is almost impossible to source.
This is a must-have for the Seiko die-hard fan, or any vintage watch fan for that matter!
